Independent Prescribing

We’re delighted to see so much interest in Independent Prescribing (IP) training from our community pharmacy teams across Avon and Wiltshire.

🎓 Funded University Places Available

NHS England (NHSE) is now offering fully funded places for Independent Prescribing courses starting in Autumn 2025 and Spring 2026.
This funding covers the cost of the university course, but you must have a Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) to apply.

🔍 How to Find a Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP)

At present, there is no additional funding available from BNSSG or BSW to support the process of securing a DPP.

  • BNSSG held an expression of interest process in March 2025, all places are now filled.
  • If more funding becomes available, we’ll update this page and notify you via email.

In the meantime, consider approaching local prescribers such as:

  • GPs at your local practice
  • Fellow community pharmacists
  • Hospital prescribers

Keep in mind that supervising your training is a significant time commitment for a DPP. You may want to offer something in return — for example:

  • Locum support
  • Staff training support
  • Collaborative project time

🧠 Preparing for the Course

If you’re still looking for a DPP, now is a good time to build relationships with local prescribers. Showing your enthusiasm and value can help open doors.

We also highly recommend completing the CPPE training:
